Crystal Jean MacDonald, a woman from Edmonton, has been sentenced to a conditional house arrest term of two years less a day for owning two large Cane Corso dogs that fatally attacked an 11-year-old boy in 2024. The ruling was made by Justice Eric Macklin following MacDonald’s conviction of criminal negligence causing death in May after a trial at the Edmonton Court of King’s Bench.
During the sentencing, emotional victim impact statements were presented, including one from the boy’s father, Wesley Grist, who expressed his ongoing grief and the profound loss of his son. He emphasized that he harbored no ill will towards MacDonald, recognizing her love for the boy. MacDonald also addressed the court, tearfully expressing her deep remorse, grief, and love for the deceased child.
The tragic incident occurred when Kache Grist, who was visiting his father from out of town, was left alone with MacDonald’s dogs, Khaos and Khairo, in her home. The dogs, both of substantial size, had a history of aggression, including previous attacks on individuals and pets. Despite MacDonald’s attempts to manage their behavior through training and containment, the fatal attack on Kache occurred due to her failure to ensure the safety of the child while in the presence of the dogs.
The judge’s decision took into account the series of events leading to the boy’s death and the responsibility MacDonald bore in preventing such a tragedy. Kache’s family continues to grapple with the loss, emphasizing the lasting impact of the incident on their lives.
