The Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB) has approved a disputed industrial project near Ice Lake in Whitehorse. The board concluded that the development would not cause significant negative environmental or socio-economic impacts.
The proposed project involves creating around 15 industrial-commercial lots on a 25-hectare area near the top of Robert Service Way off the Alaska Highway. The development will utilize the existing Ice Lake Road and involve constructing an additional 526 meters of new roadway, impacting some trails, including one leading to the popular Rock Gardens climbing spot.
Despite opposition from numerous individuals who value the area as green space, the City of Whitehorse’s official community plan designates the land for commercial and industrial purposes. The city aims to provide enough land for residential, commercial, and industrial use to support local growth and economic opportunities.
Murray Arsenault, the vice-president of the Yukon Contractors Association, supports the industrial development, stating that the city needs more commercial and industrial lots. He emphasized the importance of location for industrial land, citing transportation access and proximity to markets as key factors, which Ice Lake meets.
While acknowledging concerns about repurposing green space, Arsenault pointed out the growing demand for industrial lots over housing lots in Whitehorse. He highlighted the need for affordable spaces for businesses to grow and expand in the city.
The YESAB recommendation is now awaiting a final decision from the Yukon government.
