Tornado experts have indicated that there is strong evidence suggesting a tornado may have touched down near Bamberg in Wellesley Township on Wednesday evening. The Northern Tornadoes Project, located at Western University in London, Ont., announced on social media that a team would be dispatched to the area to assess the destruction and determine the cause.
Additionally, there are suspicions of tornado-related damage near Tavistock during the same storm. The researchers have clarified that much of the destruction from Wednesday’s weather event was likely caused by straight-line winds. They have also cautioned the public about the circulation of potentially fabricated images online, particularly from locations like Guelph and Paris, which are believed to be computer-generated.
In the aftermath of Wednesday’s storm, various regions, including Toronto, Barrie, and other parts of southern Ontario, reported damages and flooding. Wellesley Mayor Joe Nowak described the damage in his community as significant, mentioning the destruction of several barns, although fortunately, there were no injuries to humans or animals.
A housing complex in the Village of Wellesley was affected when a tree fell on its roof, prompting the relocation of residents to alternative accommodations. The storm resulted in 64 calls to the Waterloo Regional Police Service between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., regarding hazardous conditions such as fallen trees, power outages, traffic signal failures, and localized flooding.
Efforts to clean up the storm’s aftermath are ongoing in various areas, including Waterloo region, Guelph, and Wellington County. The City of Kitchener has addressed immediate clean-up needs but advises caution regarding potentially unstable trees. Residents are responsible for clearing trees on their properties, with the option to dispose of debris at regional waste management sites.
Authorities in the City of Waterloo have requested patience from residents as crews work to clear the storm debris, highlighting that the process may take several days to complete.
