Four individuals have been sentenced for pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of a 19-year-old during a reported home invasion three years ago. Ryan Nagy was fatally injured on June 29, 2023, at a residence on the 7600-block of 17th Avenue in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Rhoda Diabikulu, Ousmaine Keita, Rais Usman, and Ali Shamkhi admitted to manslaughter charges in the incident and were handed varying sentences this year. Diabikulu received a seven-year prison term with credit for 18 months of pre-trial detention, while Usman and Keita were each sentenced to six years, with credit for 29 months and two and a half months spent in pre-trial custody, respectively.
At the time of the crime, Shamkhi, Usman, and Keita were 20 years old, while Diabikulu was 23. Shamkhi, 22, was sentenced to eight years for manslaughter and an additional two-and-a-half years for firearms violations after pleading guilty in October 2025. Justice Warren Milman highlighted that the group had planned to break into the home for firearms theft, with Shamkhi carrying a knife that ultimately caused Nagy’s fatal injuries.
Milman emphasized the significant impact of Nagy’s untimely death on his loved ones and the community. He pointed out that the defendants failed to assist Nagy and attempted to evade capture by destroying their clothing. Despite Shamkhi’s limited display of remorse in a pre-sentencing report, his guilty plea and young age were considered mitigating factors in determining his sentence.
Nagy, a resident of the property where the incident occurred, was involved in competitive lacrosse in British Columbia, participating in various tournaments, including winning a gold medal with his Burnaby team at the 2019 B.C. Summer Games.
