An orthopedic surgeon in Prince Edward Island will face a six-month suspension due to engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a patient under his care. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of P.E.I. received a complaint against Dr. Stephen Miller in October 2024, alleging a breach of professional boundaries that occurred before November 1, 2021.
Following an investigation by the college, it was found that Dr. Miller’s actions could be considered professional misconduct under the Medical Act Regulations. Dr. Miller, who practices at the Polyclinic Professional Centre in Charlottetown, has acknowledged the committee’s findings and agreed to the disciplinary measures.
The disciplinary actions imposed on Dr. Miller include a six-month suspension of his medical license starting on September 25, a $15,000 fine to be paid within six months, mandatory completion of a course on maintaining patient boundaries at his own cost within the same period, and receipt of a formal reprimand for the boundary violation.
Dr. Miller’s office confirmed that existing patient appointments will be honored until the suspension takes effect. Health P.E.I. is assisting in securing a locum physician to cover Dr. Miller’s practice during his absence. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of P.E.I. did not provide further details but mentioned that the inappropriate relationship involved an adult patient.
Health P.E.I. declined to comment on the matter when approached by CBC News. Once Dr. Miller fulfills the disciplinary requirements, the process will be considered complete.
