The family of a 19-year-old man who was fatally shot by the police in August staged a protest outside Toronto police headquarters over the lack of information surrounding the incident. The victim has been identified as Kaleym Davy. His aunts, Kellise and Janelle Davy, expressed frustration at the lack of clarity regarding the circumstances of his death.
The incident, which occurred in Mississauga near Council Ring Road and The Collegeway, is currently under investigation by Ontario’s police watchdog. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) revealed that Toronto Police Service was monitoring a Mercedes in connection with a firearms inquiry.
During the incident, five unmarked police vehicles were involved, with three of them colliding with the Mercedes. Following this, an officer fired at least one shot into the vehicle, hitting the driver, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. The other occupants of the Mercedes were taken into custody and are facing firearm-related charges.
Toronto police claim that a suspect attempted to flee and struck a plainclothes officer when they tried to stop the car. The SIU confirmed the discovery of two firearms near the Mercedes but stated there was no exchange of gunfire during the incident.
Despite the tragedy, Davy’s family emphasized his positive attributes, noting his ambition to graduate, pursue carpentry, and his passion for sports. The family expressed deep distress over the lack of information and transparency in the case.
The SIU has been in contact with the family through their Affected Persons Program to provide support and updates on the investigation. The lead investigator recently briefed the next of kin, and the SIU reiterated its commitment to transparency and accuracy while conducting the investigation.
