“69-Year-Old Arrested in Deadly Hit-and-Run Case”

A man aged 69 from Hamilton was taken into custody and accused in connection with a deadly hit-and-run incident on Tuesday in Mississauga, Ontario, as stated by Peel Regional Police. Responding to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian just before 6 p.m. at the junction of Winston Churchill Blvd. and Dundas Street W., Constable Tyler Bell-Morena informed the press during a briefing on Thursday. The pedestrian, a male in his 60s, was declared deceased at the scene, Bell-Morena confirmed. The victim resided nearby and was apparently on his way home when the incident occurred. The driver departed the scene, prompting police to identify the vehicle and seek information from the public.

After the police identified his vehicle, the 69-year-old suspect was apprehended on Wednesday evening. Authorities determined that he resided in the Hannon area outside Hamilton, Ontario and arrested him at his residence. The individual has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing death, according to Bell-Morena. He mentioned that additional charges could be brought as the inquiry progresses.

In a separate development, police are seeking a driver who reportedly followed the suspect. Investigators discovered that this bystander driver may have observed the event and tailed the suspect to a nearby shopping center parking lot following the collision, engaging in some kind of interaction. It appeared that the driver was attempting to hold the suspect responsible for the accident. Bell-Morena urged this driver to step forward, as their firsthand observations could be invaluable in understanding the sequence of events. He stated, “We quite likely have a member of the public, who followed [the suspect], tried to flag them down and say, ‘Hey listen, you just hit somebody and need to go back.'” At this stage, there is no indication that the suspect returned to the scene after the collision.
