Canada’s Leylah Fernandez was eliminated from the China Open women’s tennis tournament after a hard-fought three-set match against Kamilla Rakhimova of Uzbekistan on Saturday. Rakhimova secured a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory in the second round over the 23rd-seeded Fernandez from Laval, Quebec. Fernandez, who had recently clinched her sixth WTA title at the Singapore Open, faced a tough challenge from Rakhimova, who capitalized on five of 11 break points compared to Fernandez’s conversion of two of four opportunities during the match. Rakhimova also excelled in generating more second-serve points at 63% while the Canadian managed 33%. The intense match lasted two hours and 32 minutes. Despite Fernandez being ranked 26th in the world and Rakhimova 76th, the Uzbek player claimed her fourth career victory over a top-30 ranked player, following her recent upset against Barbora Krejcikova at the U.S. Open.
