“Calgary Broadcaster Champions Unity in Canadian Identity”

Rishi Nagar, a Calgary resident and host at Red FM, shared his journey of immigration to Canada and his strong ties to Alberta. Originally from India, Rishi and his wife decided to move to Canada for their son’s education. They envisioned a brighter future in Canada, not focusing on any specific province or city, but on the country as a whole.

After a long wait, Rishi received the opportunity to move to Canada in 2008. Landing in Toronto during a challenging economic period, he eventually settled in Vancouver before making Calgary his permanent home. Over the years, Rishi established himself as a journalist and broadcaster in Alberta, actively engaging in community initiatives and contributing to the University of Calgary Senate.

Despite acknowledging the challenges and grievances some Albertans have with federal policies, Rishi firmly believes that separation is not the solution. He emphasized the importance of maintaining unity within the Canadian family and addressing concerns through dialogue and mutual respect. As a proud Canadian and Albertan, Rishi expressed his commitment to voting for Alberta to remain a province of Canada.

Sharing insights from a recent radio talk show on the referendum question, Rishi highlighted the support for Alberta to remain part of Canada among diverse South Asian callers. The consensus was clear – a separate Alberta was not favored, with concerns about increased racism and unwelcoming attitudes towards immigrants in a potentially separated province.

Reflecting on his Canadian journey, Rishi emphasized the harmony between his identity as an Albertan and a Canadian, showcasing his allegiance to both. He underlined the need for a united front in addressing challenges and disagreements within the country, rather than opting for separation. Rishi’s story exemplifies the coexistence of a strong Albertan identity within the broader Canadian context, embodying the spirit of unity and resilience.
