“Yukon Teen Wins Canadian Art Challenge with ‘Tombstone Mountains'”

Young artists from all corners of Canada were tasked with the question, ‘What does your Canada look like?’ as part of the sixth annual Canadian Art Inspiration Student Challenge. One standout response came from Farrow MacDougall, a 14-year-old artist from Dawson City, Yukon, whose winning piece, titled ‘Tombstone Mountains,’ aimed to capture the serene and enchanting essence of the Yukon landscape.

MacDougall’s artwork, created using watercolors and pencil crayons, clinched the top spot in the Grades 7-9 category. Participants were required to draw inspiration from renowned Canadian art pieces, with MacDougall drawing influence from Annie Pootoogook’s ‘Family Camping on the Land.’

‘Tombstone Mountains’ is among the 12 selected works from the competition that will be showcased at Art Toronto, a prestigious international art fair in Canada, from October 29 to November 1.

Reflecting on her creative journey, MacDougall, now a Grade 10 student at Robert Service School, shared that she has been honing her artistic skills for as long as she can remember. Despite initially doubting her own work, she was pleasantly surprised by the national recognition her piece received.

Her art teacher, Angela Edmunds, commended MacDougall for her humility and emphasized the importance of art as a form of expression and creation, rather than just a means to win awards. Both Edmunds and MacDougall stressed the significance of using art to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire positive change.

MacDougall’s deep connection to nature, particularly her affinity for animals like bears, drives her to merge art and science in a bid to advocate for environmental conservation. Her artwork not only captures the beauty of the Yukon but also conveys a message about the harmonious relationship between humans and wildlife.

Looking ahead to the Toronto exhibit, MacDougall expressed a mix of excitement and disbelief, anticipating the surreal experience of seeing her piece on display for a broader audience. For her, art is a medium through which she can share her passion with others and spark a dialogue about the world around us.
