Colin McKerral, a contender for Ward 12 in the upcoming municipal election in Greater Sudbury, has passed away at the age of 51 in Sudbury on Monday, September 28, after battling an illness, as stated in his obituary.
Known for his active involvement in the Louis Street community, where he resided in subsidized housing, McKerral was recognized as a community leader and advocate for improved living conditions by a recent CBC News profile. He consistently voiced concerns about housing quality, drug-related issues, and neighborhood safety. Despite facing multiple assaults and threats while championing for residents, McKerral persisted in his advocacy efforts.
He strongly encouraged political candidates to engage directly with tenants to better understand their challenges. Additionally, his obituary highlighted McKerral’s passion for outdoor activities, especially fishing and boating.
Following his untimely passing, friends and family members commemorated McKerral’s life on social media. As per the Ontario Municipal Elections Act, McKerral’s name will remain on the ballot if already printed.
