“Canadian PM Carney’s Nobel Peace Prize Could Strain US Relations”

If the current relationship between Canada and the United States is already strained, it could worsen significantly if Prime Minister Mark Carney were to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2026, according to Nelson Wiseman, a retired professor from the University of Toronto. The possibility of Carney receiving the prestigious award has stirred discussions, which President Trump has openly expressed interest in winning.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is set to reveal the recipient of the annual Peace Prize on October 9 in Oslo. Last year, the honor went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who presented her medal to President Trump at the White House. Despite Trump’s acknowledgment of the award, the Nobel Committee clarified that the recognition belongs to Machado.

While Trump has claimed to have ended multiple conflicts, his actions in Iran and Venezuela have cast doubt on his chances of winning the Peace Prize this year. Besides the Peace Prize, other categories will also be recognized during the ceremony, with various Canadians being considered for accolades.

The monetary award for this year amounts to 12 million Swedish kronor, which equals approximately $1.2 million US dollars, whether granted to an individual, a small group, or an organization. The nomination deadline was January 31, with the committee making the final decision in October after thorough deliberations.

Recently, traders on the prediction market Kalshi initially speculated a 14% chance of Carney winning, but his odds have since diminished. Haakon Gjerløw, the acting director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, highlighted the three main criteria for winning the Nobel Peace Prize: international cooperation, disarmament, and peace promotion, emphasizing the significance of achievements in these areas over the past year.

Carney’s nomination is believed to be influenced by his opposition to Trump and efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties with Europe, reflecting his commitment to international collaboration. However, Gjerløw also mentioned other potential candidates, such as the International Space Station, symbolizing global cooperation achievements.

Among the speculated candidates for the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine is Canadian researcher Dr. Daniel Drucker, recognized for his breakthrough in discovering the GLP-1 hormone utilized in diabetes and obesity treatments. Additionally, poet and essayist Anne Carson and renowned author Margaret Atwood are being considered for the Nobel Prize in literature, with Atwood having previously won two Booker prizes.

The last Canadian recipient of the Nobel Prize in literature was Alice Munro in 2013, showcasing the country’s rich legacy of noteworthy laureates in various fields.
