Support staff at the Vancouver School Board (VSB) have overwhelmingly approved strike action, as reported by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 963. The union disclosed that members voted with a resounding 96.9% in favor of authorizing a strike if necessary.
Tim De Vivo, the union’s business manager, emphasized their dedication to ensuring the well-being of students within Vancouver schools. He expressed disappointment in what he deemed as unjust and needless demands from the VSB management, which have sparked strong dissatisfaction among union members, leading to the significant strike vote.
IUOE Local 963 represents approximately 900 support staff in roles such as building engineers, custodians, culinary staff, and supervision aides across the school district. The ongoing dispute is focused on issues related to working conditions, job security, and the preservation of trade qualifications rather than monetary concerns.
While a 72-hour strike notice has not yet been issued by the union, the VSB has already implemented contingency measures to maintain school and district operations in the face of any potential job actions. The district underscored the importance of attracting and retaining skilled employees, promoting workforce stability, and ensuring the safe and efficient functioning of schools.
Negotiations between the parties commenced in October 2025, with discussions hitting a snag recently when the board opted not to entertain a counter-proposal put forth by union members.
