“Spectrum Advocates for $450M Funding Boost for 2SLGBTQ+ Plan”

Spectrum, a local organization supporting the 2SLGBTQ+ community, is set to participate in a national coalition’s visit to Parliament Hill. The coalition aims to urge the federal government to extend and boost funding for the existing action plan for 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Launched in August 2022 by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the plan allocated $100 million over five years to aid 2SLGBTQ+ groups, with a significant portion earmarked for community organizations like Spectrum.

Aside from the financial support, the plan allotted over $5 million for a public awareness initiative and $7.7 million for data collection and community-driven policy research. Trudeau emphasized the plan’s mission to combat discrimination, eliminate barriers, promote rights, and create a more inclusive Canada.

Spectrum will join a delegation of 45 organizations, including those focused on human rights, feminism, and labor rights, for Queer Day of Action on Tuesday. Together, they will call on the government to not only continue the program for another five years but also increase its funding to $450 million. Suzie Taka, Spectrum’s executive director, highlighted the positive impact of the existing funding and stressed the importance of ongoing support for the Waterloo Region community.

The funding has been instrumental in sustaining Spectrum’s day-to-day operations, benefiting approximately 7,000 individuals annually through various programs and services. While the current support has been vital, Taka noted a growing demand for expanded programming within the region, particularly emphasizing the need for additional support for families, youth, and newcomers.

In light of the escalating visibility of hate, Taka emphasized the critical timing for increased funding. Hate incidents, particularly targeting transgender individuals, have been on the rise. In 2025, Waterloo Region documented 172 hate-related reports, a significant increase from the previous year. Data from Statistics Canada revealed an eight percent increase in police-reported hate crimes targeting gender identity or expression between 2023 and 2024.

Taka expressed that extending the action plan with heightened funding would enable Spectrum not only to assist those facing discrimination but also to enhance public education and advocacy efforts to prevent such incidents. She emphasized the importance of proactive measures to address discrimination and hate, stressing the significance of societal shifts through comprehensive support and education.
