“Lionel Messi to Play Farewell Match for Argentina”

Lionel Messi is set to bid farewell to the Argentine national team in an emotional match against Benin in Buenos Aires on Tuesday. The friendly game, known as “The Night That No One Wants to End,” marks Messi’s final appearance for his country.

The 39-year-old soccer legend announced his retirement from international football following Argentina’s loss to Spain in the World Cup final, stating that “The time has come.” Despite his decision to retire, the Argentine Football Association convinced Messi to play one last match for the fans, who are expected to pack the Estadio Monumental to show their support.

The upcoming match is anticipated to be a poignant event, described by the AFA as one that will go beyond the realm of sports and be filled with emotion. Ahead of the game, Messi shared images on social media of his arrival to join the national team for the last time and his final training sessions, expressing his gratitude for the special moments he will miss.

Although Messi narrowly missed securing back-to-back World Cup victories, he fulfilled his dream of leading Argentina to triumph in Qatar four years prior, a feat reminiscent of the legendary Diego Maradona. With 207 appearances for Argentina, Messi departs as the all-time leading goal scorer with 125 goals, including 21 in World Cup matches. He has participated in a record-tying six World Cups alongside his longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

After a brief retirement from international duty in 2016, Messi enjoyed a successful period with the national team, winning Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 World Cup. While concluding his international career, Messi continues to compete at the club level with Inter Miami, recently capturing the Campeones Cup, his fourth trophy with the team.
