During the transport to Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, a 10-year-old boy repeatedly inquired about the proximity to their destination. Expressing discomfort, he informed the two accompanying officers of his unease.
Nearly three decades after the child was subjected to a traumatic incident involving being tied to a tree and sexually assaulted, an audio recording of his police interview from September 1994 was presented to the jury at the trial of the accused perpetrator, Richard Neil. Neil has denied the 17 charges against him, including the assault on the 10-year-old boy and two other similar assaults on an eight-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl.
The investigations into the three assaults in southern Ontario parks between 1992 and 1995 remained unsolved for years. Breakthroughs in DNA technology, specifically investigative genetic genealogy, eventually enabled law enforcement to connect the crimes to Neil. The trial is ongoing at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Brampton, Ontario.
Richard Neil, now 67, was apprehended in 2024. Despite not contesting the occurrences involving the children, the former postal worker maintains his innocence.
The victim, protected by a publication ban, recounted encountering an unknown individual at Brampton’s Norton Place Park after school. Following a brief interaction, the man alleged losing his wallet with a significant sum inside, leading to a series of disturbing events in the park, including physical and sexual abuse inflicted on the child.
A witness, David Kilpatrick, testified about encountering the distressed boy exiting the woods near Norton Place Park in 1994. Kilpatrick promptly intervened, assisting the child in seeking help and reporting the incident to authorities.
DNA evidence recovered from the crime scenes proved pivotal in linking the assaults to a single perpetrator. The prosecution detailed the harrowing accounts of the victims and underscored the importance of genetic evidence in establishing the connection between the incidents.
