“Okanagan Falls Mayoral Candidates Outline Vision”

A large audience gathered on Monday to listen to the three candidates vying for the position of Okanagan Falls’ inaugural mayor in British Columbia. In March 2025, the community narrowly approved its incorporation, marking the province’s newest municipality after 15 years.

Eleanor Walker, a long-time resident of over 40 years, expressed the significance of this milestone in the town’s history, emphasizing the potential for growth and success despite anticipated challenges.

Matt Taylor, one of the contenders, highlighted his initial entry into local politics driven by a desire to revitalize the community’s economy, a mission he has diligently pursued for several years. As the incumbent electoral area director instrumental in guiding Okanagan Falls through the incorporation process, Taylor emphasized his unique qualifications and experience in public service.

Regarding his goals if elected, Taylor stressed the importance of fostering a stronger partnership with the Osoyoos Indian Band to bring mutual benefits to the newly formed municipality, echoing successful collaborations with neighboring communities.

Transitioning from the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) is a top priority for candidate Tyler Johnsen, who aims to ensure a seamless shift for Okanagan Falls. Johnsen, who relocated to the area in 2021 and boasts three decades of construction experience, emphasizes enhancing the community’s tax base, industrial park development, and unity post-incorporation.

Glen Innes, another mayoral candidate with over 30 years of residency in Okanagan Falls, advocates for gradual growth and attracting young families to support the community’s prosperity and volunteer fire department. He also prioritizes initiatives to improve highway safety, water quality, housing, and economic opportunities in the area.

The candidates’ platforms reflect a mix of economic development, community engagement, and infrastructure enhancement, aiming to shape Okanagan Falls’ future positively. The municipal election is scheduled for October 17, with the formal incorporation of the District of Okanagan Falls slated for November 6 during the inaugural council meeting at the Okanagan Falls Seniors Centre.
