Labrador Educator Calls for Support Amid Principal Resignation

A mother of a student at Peacock Primary School in Happy Valley-Goose Bay expressed concerns about the recent resignation of the school’s principal and called for improvements in the Department of Education’s support for Labrador’s children.

Bailey Rose, who is an early childhood educator, emphasized the need for better resources and funding for the education system in Labrador. She highlighted the importance of investing in the future of children in the region.

The former principal, Ashley Barrett, resigned last week, citing a critical shortage of staff at the school, which affected student safety and education quality. Currently, the school has six out of its 27 teaching positions unfilled.

Rose commended Barrett for her dedication to supporting her son, who has ADHD, and expressed disappointment over the circumstances leading to Barrett’s resignation. She urged the Department of Education to address the realities faced by educators in Labrador.

Education Minister Paul Dinn acknowledged the challenges faced by the education system in Labrador and assured that steps would be taken to address the gaps. Meetings with school staff and the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association are ongoing to find solutions.

NDP Leader Jim Dinn, a former NLTA President, emphasized that the issues in Labrador regarding teacher recruitment and retention are long-standing. He stressed the need for proactive measures to prevent situations like principal resignations.

Rose called on Minister Dinn and the government to prioritize education and support systems that would attract more teachers to Labrador. She emphasized the importance of investing in education and housing for the region’s children.

Minister Dinn acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting the challenges in recruiting teachers to remote areas like Labrador. He pledged to work towards addressing these issues and visiting schools across Labrador in the coming month.
