A fatal shooting incident involving Sûreté du Québec officers in Valleyfield has resulted in the death of one individual.
Quebec’s independent police oversight body, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), has initiated an investigation and is urging any witnesses to provide information.
A command unit from the BEI has been established, and the area on Montcalm Street, located in a suburban vicinity close to the local CEGEP, remains cordoned off with police tape.
The BEI has reported that the incident occurred late on Tuesday afternoon following a 911 call reporting an armed individual in distress inside a residence.
Upon arrival, SQ officers engaged with the individual, who allegedly fired multiple shots at the police.
In response, the officers returned fire, critically wounding the man, who was subsequently hospitalized.
On Wednesday, the BEI confirmed that the individual had succumbed to his injuries.
The BEI has deployed seven investigators to handle the case, with the Montreal police (SPVM) providing assistance in the investigation. Additionally, the SPVM has been tasked with conducting a separate criminal investigation into the incident.
