“Arsonist of Ditch 2 Wildfire Gets 6-Year Prison Term”

A man responsible for igniting the Ditch 2 wildfire last year has received a six-year prison sentence. Jason Halkett, who admitted to arson causing property damage earlier this year, was sentenced by Judge Jeffrey Lubyk in Montreal Lake provincial court. Judge Lubyk emphasized the seriousness of the offense, noting that Halkett knowingly disregarded the risks involved.

After factoring in time already served, Halkett has approximately four years and eight months remaining in his sentence. The Crown prosecutor had sought a 10-year sentence, while the defense argued for a term ranging from three to 3.5 years. The maximum penalty under the Criminal Code is 14 years.

In court, Halkett expressed remorse for his actions. Crown prosecutor Robyn Ermine acknowledged the significant community impact of the wildfire and deemed the six-year sentence a fair compromise between the prosecution’s and defense’s recommendations.

During the sentencing proceedings, Halkett’s defense lawyer, Evan Strelioff, highlighted Halkett’s challenging upbringing, citing his fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and disadvantaged background. Strelioff mentioned instances from Halkett’s childhood where basic necessities like heat and water were lacking due to financial hardships.

While Halkett admitted to starting the fire, Strelioff argued that there was no definitive proof of recklessness on his part. The fire, which began on May 26, 2025, under severe fire conditions, posed a threat to various communities along Highway 2 north of Prince Albert.

The Ditch 2 fire eventually combined with the Shoe fire, causing extensive destruction to numerous structures and vehicles. Victim impact statements submitted to the court detailed the emotional and economic toll on residents, including fear, displacement, and loss of traditional resources like food, medicine, and hunting grounds.
