In the upcoming municipal election on Oct. 17, Williams Lake residents will have to choose between two well-versed candidates. The incumbent mayor, Surinderpal Rathor, is facing a challenge from former mayor Walt Cobb in the city with a population of just over 11,100.
Rathor, who became mayor in 2022 after serving as a city councillor from 1993 to 2014, is emphasizing collaboration, government relations, infrastructure investment, and debt reduction in his campaign. He aims to enhance the city’s partnership with the province on crucial issues like housing and mental health services.
Looking ahead, Rathor is focused on completing ongoing projects such as the water treatment plant, hospital redevelopment, indoor sports facility, and advocating for the replacement of Marie Sharpe Elementary School.
On the other hand, Cobb, with a long history of public service in Williams Lake since 1980, is running once again due to popular demand for additional leadership options. He is emphasizing public safety, addressing provincial responsibilities shifted to cities, and supporting the forestry sector and timber supply.
Cobb criticizes the lack of council unity in supporting the local MLA’s efforts in the forestry industry and highlights the need for proactive engagement to resolve industry challenges.
Both candidates present distinct visions for the future of Williams Lake, offering voters a choice between continuity and change in the upcoming election.
