“Transit Board Dissolution Inspires Lawyer’s Run for City Council”

After the London city council’s decision last year to take control of the transit board chaired by Stephanie Marentette, she felt compelled to engage in city politics rather than being discouraged. Marentette, a lawyer, expressed that the council’s move motivated her to run for a council seat in Ward 6, her residential area. She criticized some council members for inadequate performance and lack of preparation during meetings.

In Ward 6, Marentette is competing against Sam Trosow, the incumbent, along with two other candidates. The dissolution of the LTC board in 2025 following the resignation of three members was a setback for Marentette. However, a subsequent governance review vindicated the former board’s operations in her view, highlighting the need for reform in city politics.

Ian Leishman, a realtor running for the council seat, raised concerns about council overspending, particularly on projects such as Bus Rapid Transit. He criticized Trosow’s voting pattern, portraying him as a dissenting voice rather than a collaborator.

Trosow defended his voting record, emphasizing his opposition to development proposals he deemed detrimental to the ward. He highlighted his efforts to enhance property standards enforcement and redirect noise complaints to City Hall. Traffic safety emerged as a major issue for all candidates in Ward 6.

Naomi Nadea, another candidate in the ward, advocated for round-the-clock bus services by London Transit to address transportation challenges faced by downtown workers. Nadea, a Black transgender woman of color, emphasized the importance of diversity in council representation and encouraged voter participation.

The upcoming election on October 26 will determine the new council members in Ward 6, with the candidates focusing on various issues affecting the community.
