Delta police have reported another fatality resulting from the vehicle collision at Tsawwassen Mills mall on September 30. A 64-year-old individual named Gwenyth Brigit Dwyn from South Delta, who was one of the two individuals hospitalized after the incident, has passed away due to her injuries. The crash occurred during a house pole raising event following a Truth and Reconciliation Day walk organized by Tsawwassen First Nation, where two other individuals lost their lives.
Initially, authorities suggested that the driver might have suffered a medical emergency, but as of Wednesday, investigators have not determined the exact cause of the accident. The two deceased individuals on-site were identified as Tsawwassen First Nation elders Virginia Splockton and wilapiya (Barb Joe).
Delta police confirmed that the second injured person has been discharged from the hospital and is currently recovering at home. The police expressed their condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and all those affected by the tragic incident.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation, with the police receiving criticism for a lack of public updates on the case until recently. Staff Sgt. Mike Whiteley of Delta police emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough investigation to ensure that conclusions are based on objective evidence rather than premature assumptions.
Investigators have been analyzing a significant amount of evidence, including cellphone and video recordings, and have conducted a detailed scene and collision analysis. Despite the ongoing investigation, there is no evidence suggesting that the collision was intentional or motivated by ideology. The police are exploring the possibility of a medical event being a contributing factor to the collision.
Individuals who witnessed the incident or have information about the vehicle’s movements before the crash are urged to contact Delta police for further assistance.
