Health P.E.I. has announced the implementation of a masking policy in response to the rise in respiratory illnesses province-wide. Starting this Friday, members of the public will be required to wear masks when in close proximity to patients, with encouragement for mask-wearing in acute care hallways. This measure is aimed at ensuring ongoing patient safety during the respiratory illness season.
According to Health P.E.I., the decision to enforce masking protocols was carefully considered to safeguard the well-being of patients, staff, and the general public. Jillian Nixon, the director of occupational health, safety, and wellness at Health P.E.I., emphasized the importance of masking as a proactive step to maintain system stability amid heightened respiratory illness activity.
Masks will be provided at the entrances of Health P.E.I. facilities, and the health authority has committed to updating the masking policy as conditions allow. Additionally, Health P.E.I. is encouraging its staff to receive current COVID and influenza vaccinations. Staff members have been instructed on when it is appropriate to remove their masks and are expected to adhere to infection control protocols, including proper hand hygiene, staying home if unwell, and promptly reporting any respiratory illnesses to their supervisors.
