“Hamilton Student Challenges Politicians on Affordability Promises”

A McMaster University student in Hamilton, Madisen Dean, expressed skepticism towards politicians’ promises of affordability improvements, seeking tangible actions rather than mere rhetoric. Ahead of the municipal election, Dean and organizations like the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction are urging candidates to endorse the “24,000 Reasons” pledge, symbolizing the city’s child poverty count as per a 2026 report by the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton.

Several city council candidates, including Kojo Damptey, Melissa Debicki, Tammy Hwang, and others, have already signed the pledge, with mayoral candidate Scarlett Gillespie also committing to it. Notable figures present at a recent event included David Mark Cherkewski, aiming for mayor, and council candidates Damptey, Debicki, Kovacs, and Maldonado.

The Campaign for Adequate Welfare and Disability Benefits, Income Security Advocacy Centre, Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton, and Hamilton Social Workers Action Committee are actively engaged in the initiative. Furthermore, Dr. Mohammad Zubairi and Mary Craig highlighted the inadequacies of health and education systems in supporting families in poverty, emphasizing the need for decision-makers to grasp the challenges faced by impoverished communities.

Statistics from a Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton report revealed that Hamilton’s child poverty rate in 2023 exceeded the provincial average. The report also underscored the disparities in poverty rates among different family structures and the worsening income adequacy despite consistent poverty measurements.

An online survey conducted by CBC Hamilton highlighted that a significant number of voters prioritize cost of living and housing affordability as key issues in the upcoming municipal election. This survey, although non-scientific, offers insights into the pressing concerns of respondents leading up to the election day.
