Allegations of theft and fraud involving a former employee in Kugaaruk, Nunavut, are expected to have long-term repercussions on the community’s operations, according to Matt O’Halloran, the senior administrative officer. The RCMP announced on Friday that the woman faces charges related to fraud over $5,000, theft under $5,000, forgery, unauthorized document creation, and possession of criminally obtained property.
O’Halloran expressed that the situation has significantly disrupted the hamlet’s regular functioning and will impact its budget in the upcoming fiscal year. Key elements of the hamlet’s planned activities for the next year have been affected, necessitating efforts to rebalance the budget. The possibility of recovering the embezzled funds remains uncertain.
The accused individual commenced employment at the hamlet in early 2025, with the RCMP initiating a fraud investigation in August of the same year following a complaint. O’Halloran highlighted that upon swift detection of financial irregularities, the employee’s contract was terminated promptly.
Acknowledging the vigilance of hamlet staff members who reported the suspicious behavior to the authorities, O’Halloran emphasized the community’s trust in its personnel and public servants. He lauded the law enforcement and judicial processes for handling the matter appropriately.
The woman was apprehended in Pembroke, Ontario, after a nationwide arrest warrant was issued by the RCMP. She is scheduled to appear in court in Iqaluit on November 2.
