“Tom Dyas Re-elected as Kelowna Mayor, Prioritizing Public Safety & Infrastructure”

Tom Dyas has secured his position as mayor of Kelowna by defeating Ron Cannan in the recent election. Dyas garnered 19,451 votes, surpassing Cannan’s 18,482 as per initial results.

Dyas, who initially assumed office in 2022, highlighted public safety as a focal point during his campaign. In contrast, Cannan, who first joined the Kelowna council in 1996 and later served as an area MP before returning to the city council in 2022, presented a seasoned challenge.

Dyas’s victory in the mayoral race diverged from the trend seen across British Columbia, where many mayors faced defeat by experienced contenders.

Emphasizing public safety once again in his second term, Dyas has advocated for a “treatment first” strategy to address public drug use. He had previously petitioned the federal government to close a supervised drug consumption site in the city.

Furthermore, Dyas plans to explore “tiered policing” and auxiliary policing models to mitigate escalating policing costs. He aims to augment frontline positions by 75 in public safety roles, ensuring a continuous presence in downtown and Rutland neighborhoods through street patrols.

In his upcoming term, Dyas prioritizes the completion of the Clement Crosstown Connector project to enhance traffic flow, advocating for additional transit capacity and advocating for a second bridge across Okanagan Lake.

Dyas intends to utilize municipal tax deferrals to incentivize housing development, particularly for first-time homebuyers. He commits to conducting regular financial audits and quarterly reporting on significant capital projects to ensure operational efficiency within the city.

Overall, Dyas’s re-election signifies continuity in his governance approach with a renewed focus on public safety, infrastructure development, and financial accountability.
