“Ontario Man Charged with $1M Romance Fraud Scheme”

A man from Marmora, Ontario, has been charged with new offenses as part of an ongoing investigation into romance fraud, according to Durham police. Salvatore Malandrino, aged 41, was taken into custody on August 31 for allegedly exploiting multiple women he was in romantic relationships with, resulting in financial losses exceeding $1 million, as stated by the police in a press release. Initially facing five charges, including fraud over $5,000, money laundering, possession of proceeds from crime, failure to comply with a release order, and forgery, Malandrino now confronts three additional accusations. These new charges consist of one count of fraud over $5,000 and two counts of providing false information to secure a loan following reports from more victims. Malandrino remains detained, with authorities suspecting the existence of further victims and encouraging anyone who believes they have been financially manipulated by him to come forward. Victims of romance fraud often hesitate to report such incidents, with the police emphasizing that those deceived are not accountable for the actions of the deceivers, stressing that the sole responsibility lies with the individuals who exploit trust for personal benefit. Individuals possessing relevant information are urged to reach out to Durham police’s financial crimes unit or Crime Stoppers.
