“Canada Post Expands Weekend Deliveries to Ottawa and Montreal, Toronto Up Next”

Canada’s national postal service has initiated weekend parcel deliveries to residences in Ottawa and Montreal, with intentions to extend the service to Toronto by late November. The financially struggling Crown Corporation also disclosed plans to introduce weekend deliveries in additional urban areas such as Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary next year. The objective is to provide weekend delivery services to seven million households by the conclusion of 2027.

Private delivery companies have surpassed Canada Post by offering weekend and evening delivery options for several years. The Crown corporation had previously cited constraints from its collective agreement with mail carriers as the reason for not providing similar services until recently.

During the annual public meeting on Thursday, senior leadership updated on Canada Post’s restructuring initiatives and financial status. The company continues to experience financial losses, including $482 million in the first half of 2026 before tax. Leadership acknowledged the likelihood of the company needing federal loans to sustain its operations.

Rindala El-Hage, Canada Post’s chief financial officer, emphasized the necessity to reduce reliance on government funding for long-term sustainability. Despite ongoing financial challenges, the postal service is witnessing early signs of recovery as customers return following a prolonged period of labor disruptions.

In the second quarter of 2026, parcel revenue surged by 20.7% compared to the same period in 2025, while operating costs decreased by $119 million. Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) finalized a new collective agreement in June, which remains effective until 2030.
