“Haines Junction Residents Frustrated by Post Office Closures”

Residents of Haines Junction express growing frustration over the recurring closures at their local post office due to Canada Post’s struggles in filling a vacant postmaster position. A notice posted on Sept. 29 stated the temporary closure of the post office, attributing it to an unforeseen staffing shortage.

Another notice dated Oct. 1 extended the closure until Oct. 7, with limited mail deliveries continuing. Subsequent closures occurred on Monday and Tuesday of the same week. A notice on the following Friday mentioned the partial resumption of services on Wednesday but cautioned about the absence of regular opening hours.

Michael Schmidt, a local photography business owner, shared his disappointment upon finding the post office closed on a visit, with no indication of when it would reopen. While Schmidt’s operations were minimally impacted, he postponed business print orders as a precaution. Concern arose for residents reliant on the postal service for essential deliveries like medication and cheques.

The lack of reliable information exacerbated frustrations, according to Schmidt, emphasizing the importance of adhering to published opening hours and transparent communication from Canada Post. Marguerite Richard, Schmidt’s wife, also questioned the recurring staffing issues in the community, seeking clarity on potential administrative or support-related causes.

Canada Post responded to inquiries, affirming ongoing efforts to recruit for the vacant postmaster role. A temporary employee from another area provided interim coverage, though regular schedules were unattainable. Temporary staff were designated to facilitate cheque and medication deliveries, ensuring continued access to post office boxes.

Contemplating the recruitment of external staff to manage operations and train future employees, Canada Post acknowledged the limitations of temporary solutions. Schmidt advocated for a sustainable staffing approach, urging Canada Post to ensure adequate personnel availability, including backup provisions for continuity in operations.

In conclusion, the community anticipates a resolution to the staffing challenges at the Haines Junction post office for uninterrupted postal services.
