“Alaska’s Mukluk Fire 16% Contained, Threat Remains”

A wildfire in close proximity to Tok, Alaska, has been partially brought under control, as confirmed by state wildfire authorities on Wednesday. Despite this progress, efforts persist to safeguard the community following the destruction of several buildings earlier in the week. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has declared a state of disaster for the area, which triggers financial assistance for repairing public infrastructure and aiding individuals impacted by the wildfire.

The Mukluk fire spans around 2,000 hectares and is currently active roughly 100 kilometers from the Yukon border. According to the latest update from the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection, the fire has been contained to 16%, with the secured sector located within the Tok community.

As of now, 167 personnel are actively engaged in combating the wildfire, and evacuation orders remain in effect for specific areas of Tok, a community with an approximate population of 1,500 residents. Karen Webster, who arrived in Tok from Anchorage on Monday night with a group of Belgian motorcyclists, noted the diminished presence of locals in the town upon their arrival due to the ongoing emergency.

During a community meeting in Tok on Tuesday, residents were informed that firefighting crews and aerial support were being dispatched from the Yukon to assist. Yukon’s Department of Community Services disclosed that four crews, a division supervisor, and an agency representative were en route to Tok to bolster the firefighting efforts.

The weather outlook for Tok indicates cooler temperatures and potential showers in the upcoming days, with the added possibility of thunderstorms on Friday night.
