“Alberta Premier Faces Uproar Over Independence Stance”

The Edmonton stage was expected to be a secure environment for Danielle Smith, providing a platform where an Alberta premier could enjoy the support of party loyalists. However, it turned into a scene of political confrontation.

At the United Conservative Party’s 2025 annual general meeting, Smith, adorned in a pristine white suit, sat on stage with her cabinet to field queries from party supporters. Amidst the crowd, a man in a blue blazer and baseball cap approached the microphone not to inquire but to convey a message.

Jeff Rath, a constitutional lawyer and key figure in the Alberta independence movement, boldly proclaimed, “My question for the room is how many of all of us favor a free and independent Alberta?” The audience erupted in applause as Smith calmly responded, “Well, I support an independent Alberta within a united Canada.”

Unlike previous AGMs where Smith’s statements were met with cheers, this time, the audience booed her. Despite reiterating her stance for a united Canada and highlighting her accomplishments in addressing Alberta’s concerns with Prime Minister Mark Carney, Smith faced continuous disapproval from the crowd.

The dissent towards a premier at an AGM was atypical, signaling a shift within the UCP towards a movement driven by separatist sentiments. Former premier Jason Kenney acknowledged the emergence of this movement during the COVID-19 pandemic, attributing his 2022 resignation in part to its influence.

A detailed investigation by the fifth estate uncovered how Smith aligned with this movement to ascend to power. Despite public sentiment largely against independence, Smith proceeded to call for a separation referendum on October 19.

This move further divided Albertans and the UCP, with some separatists within the party now aiming to oust Smith from her position. Through various strategies, including membership drives and leadership challenges, separatist elements within the UCP are striving to advance their separatist agenda.
