“Andrea Horwath Enters Hamilton Mayoral Race”

Andrea Horwath has officially entered the race for Hamilton mayor in anticipation of the upcoming municipal election scheduled for October 26. Although Horwath had previously declared her candidacy for re-election, she had not completed the necessary paperwork to be recognized as an official contender. However, this changed on Friday afternoon when her candidacy was officially documented on the city’s website.

In a press release, Horwath acknowledged the significant challenges faced by the city over the past four years, including issues such as a housing crisis, increasing living costs, neighborhood pressures, and long-standing infrastructure neglect. While noting that not all problems have been resolved, she expressed a sense of progress made in addressing these issues head-on.

During a news conference on Friday afternoon, Horwath highlighted her contributions in advancing key projects that were previously stagnant, such as the Hamilton LRT, the Jamesville affordable housing redevelopment, and the TD Coliseum. She also emphasized the importance of enhancing cybersecurity measures, citing the 2024 cyberattack on city systems as a pivotal event that necessitated improvements in digital infrastructure.

The upcoming mayoral race is set to be a competitive one, with Horwath facing off against Keanin Loomis, her previous opponent whom she narrowly defeated in the 2022 election by a margin of approximately 1,600 votes. The race will also feature other challengers vying for the mayoral position.

Since the city’s amalgamation in 2000, only one mayor, Fred Eisenberger, has been re-elected for consecutive terms in 2014 and 2018. As the nomination deadline looms, various candidates have emerged, each presenting their unique platforms and visions for the city’s future.

Among the mayoral candidates are Sasha Austin, Ejaz Butt, Rob Cooper, Paul Fromm, Scarlett Gillespie, Keanin Loomis, Pamela Mitchell, Kevin Walker, and Nathalie Xian Yi Yan. Each candidate brings a distinct background and set of priorities to the race, promising diverse perspectives and approaches to addressing Hamilton’s pressing issues.
