Whitehorse RCMP officers have announced that their probe into a series of vandalism incidents at the Whitehorse mosque has led to the charging of an individual for hate-motivated crimes. The Yukon Muslim Society, which oversees the mosque, reported the initial incident on August 13, with subsequent reports following in the ensuing weeks.
The first occurrence involved the mosque’s doors being defaced with feces and the building being painted with offensive language overnight. Additional incidents, including spray paint on the mosque, a parked vehicle, and another structure, were reported between August 21 and September 10.
Following an investigation, a suspect was apprehended on September 11. The individual faces multiple counts of mischief related to a religious worship building, with the alleged motivation being hatred. The accused was detained until a court appearance on September 14 and was later released under specified conditions.
