“Astronaut Joshua Kutryk Thriving on ISS Mission”

Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk embarked on a six-month mission to the International Space Station (ISS) 11 days ago. During his first interaction with reporters from space on Tuesday, Kutryk expressed his enthusiasm, mentioning that he is thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Adapting to life in space, Kutryk highlighted the challenges of relearning basic tasks like sleeping, eating, and using tools in microgravity, comparing it to being a toddler discovering simple life skills all over again. Despite the frustrations, he finds joy and satisfaction in the unique environment, emphasizing his gratitude for the opportunity.

Apart from the fun aspects, Kutryk has been diligently conducting scientific experiments, focusing on mental health studies and monitoring his vital signs. This marks Kutryk’s debut space mission, following Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen’s recent participation in the Artemis II mission.

Kutryk aims to inspire Canadians towards innovation and a promising future through his space journey. He views Canada’s involvement in space exploration as a gateway to progress, fostering collaboration among industry, academia, and commercial entities to drive innovation and technology development.

Observing his surroundings from space, Kutryk mentioned passing over Vancouver and Quebec, enjoying stunning views of the northern lights. He also highlighted the importance of exercise and nutrition in space living, having lost five pounds since his arrival on the ISS.

Furthermore, ongoing experiments on board, including the Canadian project T-Bone utilizing 3D technology to study bone health changes in astronauts, underscore the significance of astronaut health research. Kutryk emphasized Canada’s pivotal role in space exploration, stressing the value of continuing the nation’s strong legacy in space endeavors for the future.
