“Borussia Dortmund Introduces App to Limit Phone Usage at Stadium”

German soccer club Borussia Dortmund is introducing a unique initiative that could penalize fans for taking selfies at the stadium. The club is encouraging supporters to limit phone usage during matches by using a special app that tracks phone unlocks. Fans who participate in the “fan mode” feature of the app stand a chance to win signed jerseys and gift cards for club merchandise based on their phone usage during games.

Borussia Dortmund aims to address the growing issue of distractions caused by selfies, social media, and streaming activities in the stands. The app will monitor how frequently fans unlock their phones during matches, excluding halftime, and allocate points accordingly. Those who minimize phone usage will earn more points and have the opportunity to win prizes, while unlocking the phone will result in point deductions.

Club CEO Carsten Cramer emphasized the unique experience of being present at the stadium with thousands of fans united in support. The rewards program and app are voluntary, with no restrictions on phone usage for fans. This initiative aligns with a broader trend in German soccer to preserve the authentic matchday atmosphere and discourage excessive social media activity, particularly by influencers using professional camera equipment.

Hertha Berlin, another German club, recently announced restrictions on commercially produced video content at matches, allowing only personal photography and videography. Similarly, Dynamo Dresden has prohibited commercial filming for social media to prioritize fan comfort and safeguard the club’s television broadcasting rights.
