“Revitalizing Curling: CEO Advocates for Future Growth”

Curling Canada’s CEO, Nolan Thiessen, is encouraging a fresh perspective and deeper discussions regarding the future of the sport. With the beginning of a new Olympic cycle, a significant $755 million boost from the federal government for high-performance sports over the next five years, and the recent release of the Future of Sport in Canada Commission report, Thiessen believes it is a crucial time to contemplate the trajectory of curling.

Thiessen emphasized the importance of a systemic approach rather than solely focusing on outcomes, stressing the need for more participants, improved skills, enhanced facility utilization, and memorable experiences to drive progress within the sport. Curling Canada has initiated the “Future of Canadian Curling” campaign, outlining a comprehensive seven-point plan encompassing various stakeholders to steer the sport in a positive direction.

In an effort to align stakeholders towards a common goal, Thiessen highlighted the necessity for unity and shared purpose within the curling community. By fostering discussions and redefining success collectively, he believes that small adjustments in mindset can lead to unified success and a clear direction for the sport.

Furthermore, Thiessen underscored the significance of creating a welcoming and engaging environment within curling clubs to attract and retain participants. He emphasized the pivotal role of facilities in delivering exceptional experiences, acknowledging the limitations in immediate infrastructure upgrades but advocating for a strategic focus on enhancing club operations and long-term planning to ensure a sustainable future for the sport.
