A six-year-old boy named DeMari Disna in Steinbach is confined indoors for the remainder of his summer vacation due to being struck by an electric bike. While out with his sisters and friends at a local soccer park, a young person riding an e-bike collided with him, resulting in a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg. DeMari’s mother, Shannon Broesky, expressed concern over the incident and emphasized the need for improved regulations regarding such vehicles.
Following the accident, DeMari received medical attention at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, where he waited for 19 hours to have a soft cast applied. He was subsequently transferred to the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg for a hard cast placement. Despite his injuries, DeMari is reportedly coping well, although his active lifestyle has been temporarily put on hold.
Shannon Broesky, who was not present during the collision, is advocating for stricter regulations on e-bikes after witnessing the impact on her son. The Manitoba government is currently working on legislation concerning battery-powered bikes and scooters. Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor expressed concern over the incident and emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety.
Steinbach’s mayor, Earl Funk, expressed dismay over the injuries sustained by DeMari and highlighted the potential dangers associated with e-bikes, especially in the hands of inexperienced riders. The incident has prompted discussions within the local council about enhancing regulations and promoting education on e-bike usage.
In a proactive move, the City of Morden has already implemented its own bylaws governing e-bike usage, including rules on helmet use and adherence to traffic signals. Mayor Nancy Penner emphasized the importance of establishing clear guidelines at the provincial level, particularly regarding the age requirements for operating electric vehicles.
Shannon Broesky encouraged accountability rather than confrontation in response to the incident, expressing forgiveness towards the teenager involved in the collision.
