A young child’s unexpected diagnosis of retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, has left her parents in shock. Ava Grace, aged three, was diagnosed with this condition at the age of one, leading to the loss of her right eye. Vicki Cooper-Bird, 37, and Ian Bird, 40, from Port Talbot, South Wales, were unaware of Ava’s condition until her eyes showed alarming changes shortly after contracting hand, foot, and mouth disease.
Doctors identified Ava’s condition after noticing abnormalities in her eye during a routine check-up. Following further examinations, it was confirmed that Ava had retinoblastoma, with the cancer having progressed significantly. Surgery was necessary to remove the tumor and her affected eye, leaving the family devastated.
Although Ava is now cancer-free, her journey to recovery has been challenging. She has faced multiple complications post-surgery, including difficulties with a prosthetic eye and ongoing medical treatments. Despite these hardships, Ava’s family remains hopeful for her future and aims for her to lead as normal a life as possible.
To support children like Ava, her family is backing the Children with Cancer UK Christmas Appeal, which provides comfort to young cancer patients through the gift of a teddy bear companion. Ava has found solace in her teddy bear, Corry, accompanying her through medical appointments and offering a sense of normalcy in difficult times.
Looking ahead, Ava’s family is optimistic about her progress and urges parents to remain vigilant for signs of retinoblastoma. They emphasize the importance of early detection through visual indicators like a white pupil in photographs. By raising awareness and supporting initiatives like the Children with Cancer UK campaign, they hope to help others facing similar challenges.
Ava’s journey may be long, but with unwavering support and determination, her family is committed to helping her lead a fulfilling life despite the obstacles she has overcome.
