The Canadian government has pledged to double contributions made to the Red Cross to aid in the wildfire recovery operations in Summerland, British Columbia. Federal Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski disclosed the commitment during a gathering in Summerland. Olszewski stated that the funds would be channeled to the Red Cross, which will determine their allocation towards the recovery and assistance for those affected by the wildfires, following discussions with the local fire department and the B.C. Wildfire Service in Summerland. Eligible donations will be matched by the government until September 5.
Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes expressed gratitude for the announcement and mentioned that the district is formulating a strategy to support the individuals impacted by the fire. Mayor Holmes emphasized the collaborative approach of the Red Cross, highlighting their focus on identifying and fulfilling the community’s specific needs in the recovery process.
The Bald Range wildfire has been one of the most devastating incidents in British Columbia this year, causing destruction or damage to approximately 150 structures and necessitating the evacuation of thousands from Summerland and nearby areas. Tragically, one person lost their life while attempting to escape, and the majority of residences in the Faulder community, situated to the west of Summerland, were razed by the fire.
