The Henwood Treatment Centre, a government-run facility in northeast Edmonton specializing in addiction and mental health services, is set to reopen following flood damage repairs, as confirmed by Recovery Alberta in a recent press release. The facility had to halt its operations and close temporarily due to flooding in June, causing uncertainty about its future. Recovery Alberta has assessed the damages and service requirements, leading to the decision to resume voluntary addiction treatment services at the location once repairs are completed. The estimated time for necessary remediation, renovations, and enhancements is projected to be one to two years, with an approximate cost of $6 million.
When the flooding occurred, Recovery Alberta proactively contacted 104 patients who were scheduled for admission to provide alternative treatment options. Additionally, staff members made efforts to inform a wider group of individuals about the temporary closure. Following the closure, some employees at the centre received layoff notices, prompting concerns among unions representing the staff. Recovery Alberta has acknowledged the staffing impacts resulting from the flood and closure and pledged to address these issues. Employees at Henwood belong to several unions, including the Health Sciences Association of Alberta, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, and the United Nurses of Alberta.
