Growing up in the Philippines, I had only seen hockey in pictures until I moved to Canada a few months before the 2010 Winter Olympics. Over time, hockey became intertwined with my journey of integration into Canadian life, providing me with a sense of belonging and connection.
After relocating to Vancouver in 2016, I rekindled my love for hockey through my partner, Mike, a devoted fan. Hockey nights with him became a cherished tradition, complete with special dinners and game-watching rituals. We embraced our differences, with me introducing him to tennis while he shared his hockey knowledge with me.
Attending hockey games at Rogers Arena in Vancouver became a shared experience for us, where we proudly support both the Canucks and Oilers. Our diverse interests and backgrounds have enriched our relationship, demonstrating that love and understanding can transcend differences.
From the thrill of that first hockey game at the 2010 Winter Olympics to the present day, my appreciation for the sport has deepened. Hockey has become more than just a game; it symbolizes patriotism, community, and the essence of being Canadian. It has become an integral part of my love story with Canada.
