“Danforth Businesses Struggle Amid Construction Chaos”

Small businesses along Danforth Avenue, like Subhan Halal Pizza and Chicken, are facing challenges due to ongoing construction work that has disrupted both foot and car traffic in the area. Owner Mohammad Firooz expressed frustration over the impact of the construction on his shop’s revenue and accessibility to customers.

The Danforth Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) raised concerns about potential closures of businesses in the area due to financial losses caused by the construction. Louis Dapergolas from the Danforth Village BIA emphasized the need for financial compensation from the city to support affected businesses.

Amidst the construction woes, Toronto’s small-business community is also grappling with rising operating costs, public safety issues, and challenges related to homelessness and mental health. John Kiru, CEO of the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA), highlighted the current challenging environment for small businesses and the need for sustained support.

Affordability remains a key concern for business owners, with rising commercial property taxes and operational expenses on main streets adding to the financial burden. Additionally, businesses are advocating for measures to address property crime, enhance safety for employees and customers, and respond effectively and compassionately to homelessness and mental health issues.

Mayoral candidates in the upcoming municipal election have acknowledged the struggles faced by small businesses and have proposed various solutions. Mayor Olivia Chow has emphasized supporting local businesses amidst trade uncertainties, while Brad Bradford’s campaign focuses on streamlining processes for new businesses and providing tax relief. Chris Alexander has proposed initiatives to reduce fees for new storefronts and improve support for people in crisis.

Although some progress has been made, TABIA believes more support is needed for small businesses, especially in terms of tax relief and easing financial burdens. Businesses in Danforth Village are urging customers to continue patronizing local establishments during these challenging times. The mayoral election on October 26 will see 53 candidates vying for the position, with a focus on addressing the concerns of small businesses in Toronto.
