Elderly Pedestrian Fatally Struck by SUV in Dorval

Montreal police reported the unfortunate death of a 69-year-old man who was hit by an SUV in Dorval’s West Island on Wednesday evening. According to authorities, a 49-year-old driver unintentionally struck the pedestrian while making a turn near an intersection at approximately 7 p.m. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the driver received treatment for shock.

The fatal collision took place close to the Ullivik Centre. This facility, established in 2016, serves as a residence and medical facility for Inuit patients from Nunavik seeking healthcare in Montreal. Tragically, two Inuit women lost their lives in separate incidents on the highway near the center in 2022.

Dorval Mayor Marc Doret expressed his condolences via a Facebook post on Thursday morning, expressing sorrow over the tragic loss of the Inuit community member. He extended sympathies to the deceased man’s friends, family, and loved ones, as well as to the staff and residents of Ullivik and the organizations supporting Inuit patients and families.

Mayor Doret mentioned a recent meeting with the president of Makivvik, an Indigenous organization representing the Inuit of Nunavik, to discuss the challenges faced by those traveling to Montreal for medical reasons. Safety concerns were a focal point of the conversation, emphasizing the importance of better support for the Inuit community.

The mayor emphasized the need for continued collaboration to assist the Inuit community, particularly in light of the recent tragedy. Police have not disclosed any additional details regarding the pedestrian’s passing.
