Doctors in England are planning a strike just before the Christmas season. Resident doctors, previously referred to as junior doctors, are scheduled to cease work from 7 am on December 17 until December 22, following a previous five-day strike. The British Medical Association (BMA) cited the government’s failure to present a satisfactory offer regarding job security and salaries as the reason for the strikes, emphasizing a recent revelation of job shortages.
Dr. Jack Fletcher, chair of the BMA’s resident doctors committee, expressed disappointment with the government’s handling of the situation, stating that a pay cut proposal combined with a lack of concrete plans to address the job crisis has left them with no alternative but to announce additional strike dates. He urged the government to consider gradually increasing salaries over a few years and implementing sensible solutions to enhance doctors’ job security, highlighting the urgency to prevent doctors from being unemployed while patients struggle to access medical care.
Resident doctors, who make up a significant portion of the medical workforce ranging from recent graduates to those with up to ten years of experience, are expected to withdraw from both emergency and routine care during the strike period. To ensure continuity of essential services, senior doctors will be on hand to provide coverage throughout this period.
