“Family Mourns YMCA Instructor’s Tragic Shooting Death”

The family of a YMCA fitness instructor who was fatally shot in Toronto six years ago expresses deep sorrow and devastation over the senseless tragedy. Shane Stanford, 33, lost his life when a bullet struck him in the head after shattering the back window of his car on Oct. 7, 2020.

During Raheem McLaughlin’s sentencing hearing at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, victim impact statements were read by the Crown. In these statements, Shane Stanford’s sister, Lakeisha Ferreira, shared the profound impact of losing her brother, emphasizing his loving and dedicated nature. She expressed the irreplaceable void his absence has left in their family and the lasting trauma she continues to carry with her.

Ferreira highlighted the ongoing emotional struggle and grief counseling she undergoes to cope with the profound loss. She described the persistent pain of knowing she will never see her brother again, lamenting the missed opportunities and the anger stemming from this tragic event.

The trial revealed that McLaughlin’s vehicle pursued Stanford’s car through a residential area in North York on the night of the shooting. McLaughlin claimed that an unidentified passenger in his vehicle was responsible for the fatal shot. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Regina and Khedive avenues, leading to Stanford’s tragic death.

Toronto police arrived at the scene moments after the shooting, finding Stanford behind the wheel with a gunshot wound to his head. Tragically, he was pronounced dead, becoming the 58th homicide victim in Toronto in 2020.

Shane Stanford’s aunt, Celena Knight, also provided a victim impact statement, describing her nephew as a remarkable individual who aspired to make a positive impact on his community. She condemned the random and senseless act that deprived her family of Shane’s presence, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability in the sentence.

Knight stressed the devastating impact of gun violence on families and communities, calling for a strong response to deter such crimes. She reflected on Shane’s warmth and spirit, noting the lasting fear and sorrow that his absence has instilled in her children and the entire family.

The Crown recommended a 22-year prison term for McLaughlin before being eligible for parole, asserting the severity of the crime and the need for accountability. The sentencing decision is expected to be delivered by the judge in the following month.
