Farage Sparks Outrage Over Powell Comments

Nigel Farage has voiced agreement with Enoch Powell’s stance against significant societal transformations in the UK. The leader of Reform UK, facing accusations of racist and pro-Hitler remarks from his school days, defended his alignment with some of Powell’s viewpoints, triggering backlash from his critics.

Enoch Powell gained notoriety for his incendiary “Rivers of Blood” speech in 1968, leading to his dismissal from the shadow cabinet due to its inflammatory nature. Farage responded to the accusations by emphasizing that his support for Powell’s positions on the Common market and resisting substantial community changes caused political debates in the late 1970s.

While Farage clarified that he no longer shares Powell’s viewpoints, former classmates alleged that he made inappropriate comments and jokes related to Hitler and gas chambers during his time at Dulwich College in south London. Powell’s grim warnings about societal dynamics and racial power shifts from his speeches were also highlighted.

Addressing specific allegations, Farage extended an apology to a former classmate, acknowledging the sensitivity of the issue. The Prime Minister called on Farage to apologize for his past actions, labeling them as indicative of his true beliefs. Farage’s defense of his remarks on Vladimir Putin, citing a past encounter between the Russian leader and the Queen, sparked further controversy during a press conference.

Farage’s controversial statements and past behaviors have drawn widespread criticism and scrutiny, with calls for accountability and reflection on his part.
