Canada’s Leylah Fernandez advances to the second round of the U.S. Open after defeating China’s Shuai Zhang 6-3, 6-2 in the opening-round women’s singles match on Sunday. Fernandez, seeded 31st, hit four aces and had three double faults, converting three out of seven break-point opportunities. She successfully saved all seven break-point chances against Zhang, who did not manage to serve any aces and had one double fault.
In another match on the same day, Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ont., emerged victorious in the men’s singles competition by defeating Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Shapovalov showcased a strong performance with 19 aces but also struggled with 11 double faults. He capitalized on six out of 14 break-point chances during the match.
