Fernie has initiated the construction of a specialized fire hall aimed at providing firefighters with a safer working environment and enhancing response times to emergencies. An official groundbreaking ceremony took place on Tuesday for the new fire hall at 1500 5th Ave., situated within a portion of Prentice Park.
According to city officials, the projected timeline for firefighters to relocate to the new facility is set for fall 2027. Currently, Fernie firefighters are operating from temporary spaces at the public works yard, necessitating them to shuttle between buildings to access their equipment and vehicles before responding to calls, revealed Fire Chief Brendan Morgan.
Morgan emphasized that the ongoing setup significantly delays response times, taking four minutes instead of the expected one minute to exit the fire hall. The anticipated benefits of the new fire hall include increased space for vehicles, improved training facilities, and a designated area to separate contaminated gear from clean zones where firefighters engage in daily activities.
The implementation of distinct ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’ spaces is crucial as it prevents the spread of carcinogens and other harmful substances that firefighters may bring back after responding to incidents. Furthermore, the new fire hall will house an emergency operations center, facilitating efficient emergency response coordination during events like wildfires.
The decision to construct the fire hall at Prentice Park follows extensive deliberations and considerations of alternative locations. Despite concerns raised by residents like Bill Sailer regarding the park’s historical use for recreational activities, Mayor Nic Milligan affirmed that the council remains confident in the site selection, highlighting its optimal size, accessibility, and alignment with the firefighters’ operational requirements.
The project received $7 million in funding from the Strategic Priorities Fund, alleviating the need for the city to borrow the full amount through a planned bylaw. Mayor Milligan expressed pride in the council and city staff for persevering through the complex process leading to the commencement of construction.
While the introduction of the new fire hall will not immediately result in the hiring of additional career firefighters, Fire Chief Morgan emphasized its significance in preparing the department for future growth and evolving community needs in Fernie.
