Former Montreal Canadiens Defenseman Lyle Odelein Dies at 58

The Montreal Canadiens are mourning the loss of former defenseman Lyle Odelein, a Stanley Cup champion with the team in 1993, who passed away at the age of 58. Odelein’s death was confirmed by the Canadiens in an official statement over the weekend. Reports from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette indicated that Odelein suffered a fatal heart attack. His final NHL season was with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005-06, where he resided at the time.

Hailing from Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, Odelein tallied 20 goals and 75 assists in 420 games during his tenure with the Montreal Canadiens from 1990 to 1996. He holds the second position in the team’s history with 1,357 penalty minutes, leading in this category throughout his six seasons with the Canadiens. Originally a seventh-round pick by Montreal in 1986, Odelein played a total of 1,056 NHL games across various teams including Montreal, New Jersey, Phoenix, Columbus, Chicago, Dallas, and Pittsburgh.

In a heartfelt statement, the Canadiens expressed their deep sorrow at the passing of Lyle Odelein, extending their sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. Odelein notably served as the inaugural captain for the Columbus Blue Jackets upon their entry into the NHL in 2000, a fact commemorated by the Blue Jackets in a social media tribute on Saturday.

The Columbus Blue Jackets reflected on Odelein’s significant contributions to the team’s history, praising his on-ice intensity as well as his warm and friendly off-ice demeanor. The Pittsburgh Penguins also paid tribute to Odelein, acknowledging his tough playing style while highlighting his generous spirit and infectious laughter.
